Here’s your yearly reminder to update your damn media kit. It was only recently when I sat down and actually looked at my media kit that I realised how out of date it actually was. Sure enough, I go into it every month or so to update a few figures, but everything else was super outdated – from the design to previous brand collaborations… I even had year-old (pretty shitty) photos on there! Here are some ways you can update your media kit this year…
Updates to make to your media kit
Is it still on brand?
This year I overwent a bit of a rebrand – with a new blog theme came a session of sitting down and actually trying to create a brand. Check your colours, your fonts, even your tone of voice in any text and make sure it matches up to your branded websites and/or social accounts.
Are the figures up to date?
Now, this is an obvious one – update your numbers! I try to do this on a monthly basis anyway, but the start of a new year is definitely a good time to check-in. Are there any social handles you’re not using anymore that aren’t necessary? Has your DA changed at all? Are there some new insights you can include about your audience?
Is your introduction still accurate?
My media kit has a short introduction to me – I always think it’s important for brands to know a bit more about the person behind it all. It wasn’t until recently that I realised I’d been sending this out saying I was still 21 years old… if my age is still out of date, what else is? Have a read through this and make sure your introduction still reflects who you are, and what work you do.
Are you giving examples of your best work?
A lot of the photos on my media kit are a bit outdated. I’m still proud of this work, but it doesn’t necessarily reflect my photography style or style of work anymore. Take this time to pick out your best shots from the last year and give it a good old refresh.
Are your brand collaborations up to date?
I always think it’s nice to include some previous brands you’ve worked within a media kit. Show future brands what they could be missing! Not only is it great for a media kit, it’s also great as a reflection task – take a moment to compile some of your favourite brands you’ve worked with over the year and give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back!
Are you undercharging?
Unless you’ve spent the last year doing nothing, chances are you’ve improved massively. Are your rates reflecting this? Take some time to calculate your rates – how much time it takes to create a sponsored post, what value there is for the brand, and make sure you’re doing yourself justice. If you’re struggling with this, feel free to drop me tweet for some guidance.
How have you updated your media kit this year?
