As people, I think one of our first instincts is negative in nature. We like to look at the negative aspects of life before considering the positive. But, recently I’ve been thinking about how important it is to pass those negative things over and to celebrate even the smallest positive happenings in our lives. In the last few weeks, I’ve been making an active effort to celebrate even the tiniest victories.
For you to celebrate something, it doesn’t have to be life-changing, it doesn’t have to have significant knock-on effects. It can be anything. I’m talking you made it to the gym? Celebrate it. You spoke to someone new today, celebrate it. Even if making it out of bed and putting some clothes on is a victory for you, you should be celebrating it.
We need to stop highlighting the negatives in our lives and understand that every single day we’re having victory after victory. Without these celebrations, there’s no way we can ever think to improve.
Think about when we set goals for example. Often these goals are big, so big in fact we can get overwhelmed with focusing on those end goals, and often this can make it harder to get to the finish line. That’s why we need to celebrate the small things we achieve along the way.
For example, an end goal of mine is to be more confident and chatty when meeting new people. Every day at work I’m achieving those little steps towards reaching that end goal – I’m talking to new people on the phone, I’m making an effort to speak up and I’m actively trying to meet new people. You best believe I’m celebrating these victories because I know these lay the foundations for the confident, sassy woman I soon to be.
And by celebrating victories, I don’t mean you need to buy yourself a few drinks or a new handbag every time you achieve something in your journey to your end goal, although girl you can totally do that if that’s how you choose to. I mean celebrate by just recognizing you’ve done something great. Remind yourself that that’s a brilliant thing, and you’re another step closer to your goal. Tell your friends, tell yourself, just know you’re killing it.
What little things have you achieved recently?
