I’ve definitely turned into a little bookworm recently with all this extra time on my hands, and with more and more of us in a similar situation, I thought I’d share 3 books I’ve read recently. Read on to see what I’ve read, what I thought and perhaps persuade you to read them next.
One in a Million by Lindsey Kelk
While I love my thrillers, I love a good romance too. One in a Million tells the story of Annie as she struggles to get her marketing agency off the ground. While struggling, she foolishly agrees to a bet to turn a stranger, who ends up to be Sam, a historian and hater of social media, Instagram famous within 30 days. The bet has a few twists and turns and quickly turns and an unlikely friendship blossoms throughout.
I really loved On in a Million. Working in social media, I loved reading a book which can show the struggles of working in the online wold. The story is light, funny and heartwarming at the same time, and you find yourself quickly resonating, and rooting for Annie throughout.
After by Anna Todd
After was undoubtedly the book I read quickest of all three. Originally a fanfiction, After is about Tessa, a new college student who has always been the perfect girl – she sticks to her studies and has the sweetest boyfriend at home. When she moves away though, she meets Hardin. The complete opposite of her, Hardin is covered in piercings, tattoos and to be honest, is a bit of an arse. Somehow though, they can’t keep apart. After is the rocky love story as Tessa goes against her mother’s wishes, and helps to heal Hardin’s troubled past.
This book really confused me. I couldn’t put it down, yet I found it annoying at the same time. The storyline seems to repeat itself a lot of times, where you can usually work out what’s coming next, and you could definitely tell it was once a fanfiction reworked. Despite that, I did enjoy it, and as part of a 5 book series, I’m looking forward to reading the next in the series… I just hope it’s not as repetitive.
After is also a film on Netflix. I’d recommend reading the book first, as, like most books that are made into films, I found the book a lot more enjoyable, with the film really missing the mark with some parts.
The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena
When I put on my Instagram stories that I was reading The Couple Next Door, I had a lot of responses raving about the book. A bestseller, The Couple Next Door is a thriller that follows the tail of Anne and Marco after their baby girl is kidnapped.
I had high hopes for this book, and honestly? I was a little disappointed. It took me a good three-quarters of the book to get into, and while the storyline was full of unexpected twists and turns, I never felt fully gripped.
Although not necessarily my cup of tea, there’s been a lot of good reviews of this book, so I’d be keen to try some others from Shari Lapena.
Are you a bookworm? What do you recommend I read next?
